Artificial intelligence is making its way into the medical field. AI and personalised medicine promise more efficient and effective healthcare. Already, various forms of machine learning are improving diagnosis. AI’s usefulness in other complex clinical processes – prognosis, prevention, treatment decisions – is currently under investigation. 

AI offers opportunities in all phases of medical care, from diagnosis to treatment. However, there are important legal, ethical and social considerations that should be investigated as AI systems are transforming clinical practices. For example, prognosis based on algorithms may trigger several concerns. 

Our researchers explore ways to facilitate “non-discrimination or equal access by design” and to promote preservation of key aspects of the doctor-patient relationship by the use of code.
