ERC GRANT FOR LInnet Taylor and Tineke Broer
to develop safer mental health apps
February 8, 2022
Digital Legal Lab researcher Linnet Taylor and Tineke Broer from the Tilburg Institute for Law, Technology, and Society (TILT) received a Proof of Concept grant worth €150,000 from the European Research Council. The researchers will use the grant to develop a new rating index for app safety, focusing on mental health apps.
Mental health apps surged during the pandemic, downloaded by millions in search of relief from anxiety, stress and other psychological struggles. But can you trust an app with your mental health data?
According to Linnet Taylor and Tineke Broer, ‘app safety’ is currently treated as a very narrow concept. They aim to develop a new rating index for app safety that reflects the concerns of app users about how their mental health data are used.
The proposal has been awarded a €150,000 Proof of Concept grant from the European Research Council, which is a ‘top-up’ grant intended to support excellent research that the ERC funds by funding further work. The project is based on the work of the Global Data Justice ERC project led by Linnet Taylor.
