Bart van der Sloot, one of the Digital Legal Lab’s project leaders, has received the Academy Early Career Award from the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). He is one of twelve young researchers to be awarded for their innovative scientific work.<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

At the Tilburg Institute for Law, Technology, and Society (TILT), associate professor Bart van der Sloot works on the intersection between law and tech. He specializes in privacy and big data. With a background in law and philosophy, he looks at legal, ethical and societal issues surrounding the rise of new technologies.<\/p>\n

Bart’s recent work includes an interdisciplinary study on non-discrimination by design in AI technology, which resulted in a handbook intended to guide the use and development of algorithmic systems. Another recent study focused on the legal challenges of deepfake technology. Bart shares his perspectives on the risks and regulation of deepfake tech in The Deepfake Society<\/a>, a<\/em> YouTube documentary by the Digital Legal Lab.<\/p>\n

About the award<\/b><\/p>\n

The KNAW Early Career Award will be presented at the KNAW on 14 February 2023 for the fourth time. It is a prize intended for researchers in the Netherlands at the beginning of their careers, who have innovative, original ideas. The prize consists of 15,000 euros and a work of art.
