DLS researcher Eleni Kosta publishes paper in the 15th edition of the data protection and privacy book

We would like to congratulate DLS researcher Eleni Kosta and her colleague Magdalena Brewczyńska for the publication of their paper ‘From the Fight Against Money Laundering and Financing of Terrorism the Fight for Fundamental Rights: The Role of Data Protection’ in the newest edition of the Data Protection and Privacy Book.

DLS researcher Eleni Kosta (Tilburg University) is a professor in technology, law and human rights. She is working on privacy and data protection, specialising in electronic communications and new technologies, as well as on health law. Magdalena Brewczyńska is a PhD researcher interested in privacy, data protection and cybersecurity as well as European criminal law and Anti-Money Laundering.

In their paper, they explore the application of European Data Protection law to the Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (CFT) system. They aim to provide an outline of the most common instances in the European AML/CFT framework that require the sharing of personal data and to shed light on the interpretation of some core EU data protection rules in light of the objectives of the European AML/CFT framework.

The Data Protection and Privacy Book in its 15th Volume ‘In Transitional Times’ is one of the results of the 15th annual International Conference on Computers, Privacy and Data Protection (CPDP) from May 2022. It gathers a selection of papers from the conference addressing issues regarding privacy, data protection and AI. The range of topics covered in the book include data protection risks in European retail banks, synthetic data generation as a privacy-preserving technique for the training of machine learning models, the effectiveness of privacy consent dialogues and many more.
